Eating Well as a Diabetic


There is a pretty common misconception when it comes to diabetes: that you can only get it by being excessively overweight. But the fact of the matter is that some people are born with an inability to produce the blood sugars naturally that they need.

This is called Type One Diabetes. This can become apparent at a young age and is typically passed down through genetics. Type Two Diabetes is usually adult on-set and can be managed with proper diet and exercise.

Still, knowing what to eat when you deal with diabetes can be a tricky endeavor. Follow these tricks and you will be able to manage your blood sugars even better than ever before.

Go Whole

Whole grains are great for diabetics. Stick with whole wheat pasta or brown rice and look for 100% whole wheat breads and flour as well as other whole grains such as barley and oats. The right amount of grains can give you the fuel you need for your day and are very good for your body.

Fiber Is Your Friend

If you are diabetic, try to aim for at least eight grams of fiber per meal. This is especially true when you eat foods that are carbohydrate-rich. Not only does fiber help to manage your blood sugar levels, but it can help you feel full so that you avoid unnecessary snacking. And it’s good for your heart health, too, which is important because diabetes makes heart disease more likely.

Stick to things like beans, peas, oats, fruits like apples, pears, berries, or citrus, oats, and vegetables like Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, broccoli, beets, and carrots. You get a lot more nutrients from these foods that you are likely missing out on and it’s a great way to manage your diabetes.

Good Fats Are Good for You

Carbs are the fuel but sometimes they can be overdone. Try replacing some of those carbs with monounsaturated fats. What is that? Try things like olive oil, nuts, canola oil, and avocados which can also help to lower your blood sugar. Make sure that you avoid huge portions, though, as these foods are high in calories.

Adding those things to entrees and salads will make them more filling and give you those good fats that your body needs to thrive and for you to manage your blood sugar levels better than ever before.
