How to Build a Minimalist Wardrobe

If you’re tired to choose a perfect outfit from your hefty wardrobe every day, then it’s time to downsize. This exhaustion can lead to fatigue and may also affect your decision-making capacity for the whole day. It’s one reason why Steve Jobs and other significant people opt to wear essentially the same clothes every day.

But you don’t have to compromise your fashion style. Here are steps on how to create a minimalist wardrobe that will still make you look fashionable every day.


  1. Look at What’s Inside Your Closet

Before you decide on what clothes you should keep and discard, look at what you currently have. Don’t be scared to empty your closet and put everything onto your bed. It might sound like an arduous effort, but you need to see everything at once. You might also want to set aside any pieces that require repair before inclusion.


At this point, you should set your goals for your closet. Do you want to save on dry cleaning costs? What style do you want to have? This way you’ll know what you want to achieve.


  1. Select What’s Staying in Your Closet

Being selective is one way to improve your wardrobe. Select only the pieces that you need and really love to wear. Anything that’s worn out or doesn’t fit your style is not included.

As you decide what clothes to include in your closet, ask yourself whether you can style it in many ways. You should also consider keeping the clothes that are suitable for the season and are well-made.

In your minimalist wardrobe, you should have about 35 pieces of clothing including shoes, bags, jeans, trousers, blazers, dresses, skirts, and tops. If you live in a cold region, include two coats. If you live in a warm area, substitute the coats with a swimsuit.


  1. Store Discarded Pieces Properly

Now, that you have put all the pieces that you want in your closet, store the rest out of sight. This will help you stick to your new wardrobe and get back to them when the season is right. For example, a tank top might not be suitable for winter, but you can get it back during summer.


  1. Try Your New Wardrobe for Three Months

Once you’ve selected and stored the discarded items properly, it’s time to live in it. Use only the clothes that are in your closet for three months. You can mix and match to extend your options.


  1. Begin Again

When three months is almost near, evaluate on what worked and what failed. Did you realize that you don’t wear heels frequently? Do you need more colors on your wardrobe? Take those into account as you create your capsule wardrobe for the next season.

If you have totally forgotten about the discarded pieces for the past three months, then it’s time for them to permanently go. You can donate them to a good cause or give your outgrown clothes to your younger relatives.
